Finding the Right Therapist: Steps to Take When Beginning your Mental Health Journey

In the journey towards healing and self-discovery, choosing the right therapist is a crucial step. It can often feel daunting, but with the right approach, it can be a transformative and empowering process. Here are some key considerations to help you find the best therapist for you:

  • Identify Your Needs: Before you start your search, take some time to reflect on what you hope to achieve through therapy. Are you seeking help for anxiety, depression, trauma, or relationship issues? Understanding your needs will guide you in finding a therapist with the right expertise and approach.

  • Research Different Therapists: Look for therapists who specialize in the areas you're interested in. You can ask for recommendations from friends, family, or healthcare providers, or search online directories such as psychology today.  Read their profiles, view their websites, check their credentials, and see if their approach resonates with you.

  • Consider the Therapist's Approach: Therapists use different approaches and techniques. There are many modalities therapists use such as EMDR for trauma healing, EFT (emotionally focused therapy) IFS (internal family systems) CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) DBT (dialectical behavioral therapy), SE (somatic experiencing) and many more. If you’re seeking relationship counseling, make sure the therapist has qualifications in working with couples and systems. Research these approaches to see which one aligns best with your goals and values.

  • Assess Their Experience and Qualifications: Look for therapists who are licensed and have experience treating issues similar to yours. Consider their years of practice, areas of specialization, and any additional training or certifications they may have. Therapists with associate level licenses are under supervision and usualing have an ‘A’ in their credentials, such as LAMFT (licensed associate marriage and family therapist ) and  LAC (licensed associate counselor). Fully licensed therapists have met all of the required hours to practice independently such as LMFT (licensed marriage and family therapist).  and LPC (licensed professional counselor.).

  • Compatibility and Trust: Building a strong therapeutic relationship is the most essential element for successful therapy. Trust your instincts when you meet or talk to a therapist. Consider their communication style, empathy, and whether you feel comfortable opening up to them. The energy between you and the therapist should feel aligned and if it doesn’t,  don’t be afraid to keep looking.

  • Logistics: Practical considerations such as location, availability, and cost are also important. Choose a therapist whose location is convenient for you, and whose fees align with your budget and coverage.

  • Initial Consultation: Many therapists offer a free initial phone or video consultation. Use this opportunity to ask questions, discuss your concerns, and get a sense of how you might work together.

  • Seek Feedback: Don't hesitate to ask for feedback from the therapist or from others who have worked with them. Hearing about others' experiences can provide valuable insights.

Remember, finding the right therapist is a personal journey, and it's okay to take your time to find the best fit. Trust yourself, be open to the process, and believe in the positive changes that therapy can bring to your life.
